Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm on the morning of September 20, 2017, bringing winds of about 160 mph to an island that had narrowly escaped the worst of Hurricane Irma’s destruction just weeks earlier.

Our project, Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry and Rainforest Enrichment Project, established 35 years ago by the Institute of Ecotechnics, lay directly in its path.

Andrés Rúa and I took shelter in the concrete bunker on the homestead, only to emerge into a completely transformed reality—a world forever changed.

This is my visual story of Hurricane Maria’s impact on our rainforest project in Patillas, on the land known as Las Casas de la Selva, in southeast Puerto Rico.
