3t Vakil is a Performance Scientist and Research Artist, and serves as President of the Tropic Ventures Research & Education Foundation at Las Casas de la Selva—a sustainable forestry and rainforest enrichment project in Patillas, southeast Puerto Rico, where she has lived for over two decades.
A Director of the Institute of Ecotechnics, 3t works at the intersection of ecology, art, and exploration. Her experience spans coral reef research and marine expeditions across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, as well as decades of work in forest ecology and conservation.
With a background in 3-Dimensional Theatre Design, 3t apprenticed under scenic artist Mary Coxon and worked for years on large-scale productions across the UK. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she became a key figure in the UK’s shamanic dance and rave scene, where her passion for art and nature fused with her role as an ambient architect—shaping immersive environments that evoked altered states and elemental connection.
In 2015, she co-founded Puerto Rico Hardwoods, leading a pioneering effort to salvage and mill valuable hardwoods felled by Hurricane Maria, transforming storm-damaged trees into sustainable resources for local use.
3t’s artistic practice is inseparable from her ecological work. Informed by sustainable forestry, conservation horticulture, and botany, her art is a reflection of the rainforest ecosystem she inhabits. She collaborates with institutions like Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) on the recovery of critically endangered endemic species.
A Fellow of both the Linnean Society, and the World Academy of Art & Science, 3t embodies the fusion of art and science. In 2021, she received an Innovation Award from Yale University’s International Society of Tropical Foresters in recognition of her visionary work.
My paintings, deeply rooted in the landscapes and rhythms of the natural world, reflect both my experiences and mission to preserve the earth’s fragile beauty.
