THRITY JAL VAKIL
3t has always been an intrepid explorer of the natural world. Her travels have taken her over much of Europe, India, Nepal, east and north Africa, and north America. Her painting and digital work have documented her travels and life. 3t, born in the 1960s, of Zoroastrian parents in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, moved to Wimbledon, home of the Wombles, London, UK, at the age of ten. There are several sub-species of Womble, the most interesting being the Loch Ness Monster, part of a clan of water Wombles, and the yeti of the Himalayas, giant snow-white Wombles.
Under professor of theatre arts, Malcolm Griffiths, at Trent, Nottingham, 3t graduated in 3-Dimensional Theater Design. Apprenticing with master scenic artist Mary Coxon for two years, she participated in West End and Music shows all over England, Scotland, and Ireland. She spent a decade as a scenic artist working on huge canvas backdrops and scenery, in studios and theaters with paint-frames, all over the UK, and in London at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms in Soho, and The Theater Royal, Drury Lane. Painting for large-scale musical theater productions in London venues, and for UK tours, she also created fringe theater productions in the UK.
In the late 80’s and early 90’s, 3t became a dynamic vector in the boundary-pushing UK shamanic dance/rave scene. In the role of ambient architect, she helped organize Warehouse Parties in the north of England.
In London she became a player in the Megatripolis scene, and with the “Zippy Pronoia Tour To US, 1994”, took a road expedition across the US from New York to San Diego with 12 co-inspirators.
They organized ‘raves’, interacting with cultural icons such as Paolo Soleri, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, Johnny Dolphin, The Biospherians, Terence McKenna, Wired magazine, John Perry Barlow, RU Sirius, Dee-Lite, Lady Miss Kier, and Goa Gil to mention a few.
An Associate of the Institute of Ecotechnics since the early nineties, 3t has hands-on and hands-up experience in a range of fields: ecology, event management, arts, expeditions, and theater. After living and working in the Institute’s transvangarde October Gallery in Bloomsbury, London, 3t went to sea.
In the mid 90’s she served nearly three years as an all-round crew member, and as Assistant to the Expedition Chief, Christine Handte, diving on coral reefs in remote parts of the Red Sea & Indian Ocean on the Institute’s Research Vessel Heraclitus, also crossing the Atlantic and Mediterranean Oceans.
Coral reefs, the most sensitive ecosystem on the planet are the first to show signs of distress in response to environmental change. 3t had the opportunity to participate in scientific dive-studies on vast coral colonies, swim with manta ray and giant octopus, and study first-hand some of the most diverse and beautiful marine environments in the world.
3t traveled most of 1998, painting, and exploring in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zanzibar, East Africa, in San Francisco, California, Ashland, Oregon, and Bellevue, Washington, exploring history, art forms, performance, and the nature, origin and levels of consciousness.
She lived in the high desert in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at Synergia Ranch, Center for Innovation, co-managed a 500-tree organic fruit orchard, from tree care to fruit sales, and contributed to all areas of ranch-life, working with The Institute of Ecotechnics, the Biosphere 2 archive, Global Ecotechnics Corporation, Theater of All Possibilities, and Synergetic Press, an award-winning independent publisher.
Since 2000, 3t has lived in the wet, steep, forested mountains of the island of Puerto Rico, with the Caribbean Sea surrounding its southern and western coasts, and the North Atlantic Ocean bordering its northern and eastern coasts.
She currently serves as Director of Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry & Rainforest Enrichment Project, a one-thousand acre reforestation and timber project in the mountains of Patillas, southeastern Puerto Rico.
Through silvological work, (a new word that encompasses the understanding of natural forest ecosystems and the design and application or non-application of silvicultural systems), Tropic Ventures develops sustainable forest management practices with an ecolonomic approach to timber production. A recent project highlights the fact that hundreds of urban trees are cut down every year and sent to landfill, and proposes a solution. 3t also directs Endangered Species Conservation & Recovery within Tropic Ventures’ forest, as well as land Enhancement projects that benefit rare or endangered fauna.
3t leads adult and teenage groups in the field, has worked with 57 International Earthwatch research teams in the rainforest since 2001, and has been a Principal Investigator in these teams since 2007. 3t’s work has included measuring and monitoring hundreds of trees, planting trees, vine studies, homestead and volunteer management, forest-road maintenance, drainage and erosion control, watershed awareness, and creation of a sustainable forestry enterprise. 3t has been an invited speaker at several Universities in Puerto Rico, and in 2014, at the Earthwatch Summit in Boston.

3t, siempre ha sido una ávida exploradora del mundo natural y viajera incansable. Ha recorrido Europa, India, Nepal, Este/Oeste de África y América del Norte.
A través de sus pinturas y trabajo digital ha documentado sus viajes y su vida. 3t (pronunciación de “Thrity”), nació en Kenya (Este de África) en una familia Zoroástrica (Religión de los Magos). A la edad de diez (10) años toda la familia se muda a Londres.
3t estudió Diseño Teatral Tri-dimensional e hizo un internado de dos años con la grán maestra del arte escénico Mary Coxon. Trabajó en obras teatrales presentadas en Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda. Por espacio de una década fue escenógrafa de producciones a grán escala de musicales y obras teatrales en Londres y Reino Unido. Además diseñó producciones de teatro “Fringe”.
A finales de los ’80 y durante los años ’90, 3t estuvo profundamente inmersa en el escenario de danza shamánica y el movimiento “Rave” de Reino Unido y en el rol de arquitecta ambiental, organizó “Warehouse parties”, (eventos masivo de baile y música) al Norte de Inglaterra.
En Inglaterra fue parte del equipo de “Megatripolis” y fue miembro de la gira artística “Zippy Pronoia Tour to US” en 1994; una expedición por carretera a través de la nación Norteamericana desde Nueva York a San Diego, con una dozena de participantes organizando “Raves” e interactuando con íconos culturales tales como: Johnny Dolphin, Paolo Soleri, Allen Ginsburg, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, Ram Dass, Terence McKenna, John Perry Barlow, RU Sirius, Dee-Lite y Goa Gil, entre otros.
Como Asociada del Instituto Ecotécnico desde principios de los ’90, 3t acumula experiencias en varios campos de investigación, ecología, administración, artes, expediciones, teatro y gestión de eventos. Después de vivir y trabajar en “October Gallery” en Bloomsbury, Londres, galería “transvanguard” del Instituto, en el 1995, 3t, renuncia a todo y se muda al mar.
En sus tres años como Asistente de Jefe de Expedición (Sra. Christine Handte) del barco “Vessel Heraclitus” (propiedad del Instituto), 3t participó en investigaciones marinas de arrecifes de coral en áreas remotas del Mar Rojo y Océano Indico, además de cruzar el Océano Atlántico y el Mediterráneo. Los arrecifes de coral son los ecosistemas más susceptibles del planeta y los que primero muestran signos de anomalías en respuesta a los cambios ambientales. 3t tuvo el privilegio de estudiar de primera mano en algunos de los más bellos entornos marinos del mundo.
Por varios meses, 3T viajó, pintó y exploró el Este de Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania y Zanzibar). Además vivió cortos periodos en San Francisco, California; Ashland, Oregon y Bellevue, Washington, trabajando en varios proyectos artísticos, explorando formas diversas del arte y la naturaleza, y el origen y mecanismo de la conciencia.
Por cuatro años vivió en Santa Fe, Nuevo México en Synergia Ranch, Centro de Innovación y, fungió como Gerente Auxiliar del huerto frutal orgánico de 500 árboles, teniendo a cargo su cuidado, la venta de frutas y ayudando en todos los aspectos del rancho. Además de trabajar en el Institute of Ecotechnics, Global Ecotechnics Corporation, Theater of All Possibilities y Synergetic Press, una publicadora independiente ganadora de varios premios.
Desde el año 2000, 3t ha vivido en medio de las montañas húmedas de Puerto Rico, entre del Mar Caribe y el Océano Atlántico. Actualmente es la Directora del proyecto Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry & Rainforest Enrichment, una reserva natural de mil cuerdas de terreno en la zona montañosa de Patillas al Sureste de la Isla. www.eyeontherainforest.org
3t dirige el programa de Conservación y Recuperación de Especies en Peligro de Extinción de este bosque, así como de programas de Mejoramiento de Hábitat para el beneficio de fauna rara o en peligro de extinción. A través de trabajos de “silvilógica” y silvicultura con árboles, arte y cultura -el desarrollo y manejo de prácticas sostenibles en bosques, con un acercamiento ecológico y económico para la producción de madera. El proyecto más reciente de Las Casas de la Selva está dirigido a educar sobre la pérdida del recurso madera que ocurre en la Isla.
3t ha dirigido muchos grupos de adultos y jóvenes en el bosque y ha trabajado con sesenta (60) voluntarios de Earthwatch International, en equipos de investigación sobre el bosque pluvial desde 2001. Además es Investigadora Principal de esta organización desde el 2007. Ha participado como conferenciante invitada en distintas universidades en Puerto Rico y en el 2014, en la Cumbre Earthwatch en Boston.
