“Uncovered”

Size: 46″ x 16″ x 14″ high

Carved from salvaged Mahogany, Swietenia x aubrevilleana (S.macrophylla x S.mahagoni)

This first sculpture “Uncovered” in mahogany emerged less as an object and more as a release hidden within the timber itself. Carved from salvaged mahogany, the form retains the memory of the tree’s growth rings, currents, and internal pressures, allowing the wood’s own history to remain visible across its surface. Rather than imposing geometry upon the material, the sculpture follows the latent movement already present within the grain, revealing a shape that feels simultaneously geological, botanical, and anatomical.

Its elongated curvature suggests many possible identities at once: a seed pod, a vessel, a sleeping creature, a fragment of landscape worn smooth by water and time. The central swelling rises like an embryonic form suspended within the body of the wood, while the tapering ends create a sense of directional movement, as though the sculpture is still in the process of becoming.

What is most striking is the luminous depth of the mahogany itself. The polished surface catches light in concentric bands that resemble topographic contours, tidal movements, or atmospheric currents. The wood appears almost alive beneath the finish, shifting between amber, copper, crimson, and deep umber depending on the angle of light. In places, darker mineral-like edges remain visible, grounding the sculpture in the raw physicality of the original tree.

As a first sculptural work, the piece already reveals an instinct to collaborate with material rather than dominate it. The sculpture does not feel manufactured. It feels uncovered. Its presence carries both calmness and latent force, balancing refinement with something primordial and elemental.

The work stands as an encounter between salvaged tropical hardwood and intuitive form, where the hidden architecture of mahogany becomes both medium and subject.
